The graph presents the information about the participants in various activities at a social center in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview of the main trends and selecting key data points to report and compare. The opening overview correctly identifies the steady trends in the film club and martial arts, the upward trajectories in table tennis and musical performances, and the downward trend in amateur dramatics. Key features are highlighted, such as the initial high participation in the film club and the dramatic surge in table tennis. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or imprecise; for instance, stating that musical performances started in 2010 when the chart shows zero participants prior to that year could be framed more explicitly, and the reference to amateur dramatics falling 'by the time' is a slightly awkward phrasing that lacks full clarity. Despite these minor limitations, the overall response covers the graph effectively, earning credit for a well-rounded and structured treatment of the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the overview and subsequent body paragraphs. Information is structured reasonably well into distinct paragraphs, and the writer makes appropriate use of cohesive devices to guide the reader through the comparisons, such as 'Overall', 'However', 'Similarly', and 'On the other hand'. Nevertheless, some aspects of cohesion are slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'and the number' or 'both of them'. Referencing is generally clear, but paragraphing and transitional flow could be enhanced to achieve a more seamless presentation of ideas, reflecting a solid command of foundational discourse markers while leaving room for more flexible and unobtrusive cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is employed for the task, allowing the writer to successfully describe trends, quantities, and changes over time using terms like 'steady', 'fluctutated', 'dramatic increase', and 'climbing up'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items, though this is accompanied by occasional inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. For example, using 'contestants' instead of 'participants' or 'members' is contextually less precise for a social centre, and there are minor spelling slips such as 'fluctutated' and 'inceased'. Furthermore, phrases like 'fell by the time' lack natural idiomatic collocation. However, these lexical errors do not impede communication, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main features of the chart clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses such as 'While the participants in amateur dramatics fell by the time' and 'although they started with less participants'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'the number of contestants in martial arts were', incorrect quantifier usage with countable nouns ('less participants' instead of 'fewer participants'), and minor prepositional or structural awkwardness. Fortunately, these errors are sporadic and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning without difficulty. To reach a higher band, the writer would need to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and eliminate basic agreement slips.
