Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response partially addresses the task by reporting some of the main trends from the chart, such as the stability of the film club and the dramatic increase in table tennis participation. However, the overview is missing entirely, as the opening sentences merely copy the prompt rather than outlining the overarching trends. Furthermore, the selection of data is flawed, with several inaccurate figures and confusing references to percentages rather than raw numbers of participants. The ideas are limited and under-developed, which prevents the response from achieving a higher level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation with the use of paragraphs, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are either inadequate or awkwardly used, such as the repetitive use of 'then' and conversational phrases like 'If we talk about on martial arts'. Paragraphing is not fully managed, as the body paragraphs group disparate points without a logical flow. Referencing is also unclear at times, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of information across the different activities.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'dramatic change' and 'gradually decrease', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as using 'percent' instead of the number of participants. There are also issues with word forms, such as 'amateur club' instead of 'amateur dramatics'. These lexical inaccuracies occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and prevent smoother communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex sentences that are often faulty. There are noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation throughout, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'The provided graph illustrate' and incorrect prepositions and verb tenses, such as 'is started'. These frequent errors frequently cause difficulty and strain for the reader, keeping the control of grammar at a basic level.
