Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and covering the main trends for all five activities across the twenty-year period. Key features, such as the film club maintaining the highest participation and table tennis experiencing a dramatic increase, are accurately reported and supported with data from the visual. The overview effectively summarises the main directions of change, such as noting that amateur dramatics experienced a significant decrease while musical performances rose steadily. While the response presents all necessary information clearly and meets all requirements of the task, some minor details could have been further extended to reach a higher level of development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas throughout the text. Information is logically grouped into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs detailing specific trends. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, as seen with phrases like 'Overall,' 'whereas,' and 'in contrast.' However, cohesion is at times slightly mechanical or repetitive in sentence openings, and referencing could be smoother in places. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the response, ensuring the reader can easily follow the comparisons made between the different activities.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range to describe trends and changes effectively. The writer successfully attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'vast majority,' 'dramatic increase,' and 'upward trend.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'amateur dancers' instead of 'amateur dramatics,' and minor mechanical slips like 'trough out' and 'fluctuationsbetween.' These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a level of vocabulary control that prevents the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable attempt at varied syntactic structures. Good examples of complex structures include 'While the response... / Musical performances started in 2005, but their participation showed an upward trend...' There are some noticeable errors in grammar, such as 'The chart illustrates gives,' missing plural agreement in 'martial arts remain same,' and minor punctuation spacing omissions. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the descriptions of the chart with ease.
