Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by presenting an overview of the trends and reporting key features of the data across the five activities. The main features are appropriately highlighted, such as the film club remaining the most popular throughout the period and the dramatic shift in popularity between amateur dramatics and table tennis. The overview clearly outlines the general direction of the data. However, there is a slight tendency to generalise or miss minor specific data points, meaning that while all requirements are addressed, some trends could be developed or contextualised with greater precision to move higher.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation, beginning with an introductory sentence and an overall summary paragraph, followed by detailed body paragraphs that group the data logically. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In addition', and 'Meanwhile' are used to connect ideas, though some transitional phrasing feels slightly mechanical or repetitive ('In addition', 'At the end'). Paragraphing is handled appropriately, dividing the overview from the specific data breakdowns. To fully bridge the gap to higher bands, the logical progression within sentences and the integration of referencing words require smoother execution.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'fluctuated', 'declined', and 'dramatic growth'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'invoved', 'Australis', 'flactuated', 'stadily groeth', 'amd', and 'futhermore'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to this level. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to demonstrate greater control over less common vocabulary and eliminate spelling slips and awkward collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like time clauses and comparative phrases. However, frequent grammatical errors occur, including comma splices, missing prepositions, and faulty subject-verb agreement or tense usage, such as 'this trend slightly declined in 2010 at 60 before it rose again', 'this number not increased more than 40', and 'table tennis players around 19 was increased'. These frequent errors require the reader to occasionally work harder to interpret the meaning and prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
