Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by summarising the line graph depicting participation numbers at a Melbourne social centre between 2000 and 2020. However, the overview is confused, stating that 'the number of activities consist in five categories' and incorrectly claiming that 'the table tennis is the highest proportion' or that amateur dramatics has the lowest activities. While some specific data points are reported, such as the film club figures and table tennis rising to 56 in 2020, the overall selection and reporting of main features lacks clarity. The relationship between categories is inaccurately described, as table tennis actually started low and grew significantly, whereas the film club remained consistently high. To reach a higher standard, the overview needs to accurately identify the overall trends—such as which activities increased or decreased overall—and present a clearer, well-organised summary of key features rather than disjointed data fragments.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text is divided into paragraphs, which provides a basic structural framework, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Sentences are often disjointed, and the logical flow between statements is weak. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, with repetitive transitions like 'In 2000,' and 'In contrast,' awkwardly forced into the text without creating proper logical links. Furthermore, referencing is unclear in places, such as 'After that they are dramatically increase,' where the pronoun reference is confused. To improve cohesion, the writer needs to group related data logically—such as grouping rising trends together versus declining ones—and use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive markers to guide the reader smoothly through the comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, reflecting a basic range adequate only for minimal communication. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as 'amareur dramatics' (spelling), 'quamtities' (spelling), 'performnace' (spelling), and awkward word choices like 'the contributors is 38' instead of participants. Verbs and nouns are frequently confused or incorrectly formed, such as 'graduallu decrease' or 'fastly' instead of rapidly. Uncommon lexical items are attempted but rendered inaccurate due to poor word formation and spelling slips. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary range, learn correct spellings and word forms, and use more precise reporting verbs and adjectives to describe trends, such as 'fluctuate', 'decline', and 'substantial'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences with frequent grammatical errors. Attempts at more complex structures are consistently faulty, seen in clauses such as 'the number of activities consist in five categories film club, Martial art...' and 'the table tennis show the highest proportion in other activities in 2005 the quamtities of participants is 20 after that five years the participants level increase very fastly'. There are frequent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the musical performance start'), article usage, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. Punctuation is also neglected, with run-on sentences lacking proper separation. To progress, the writer needs to practise forming accurate complex sentences with correct tense consistency and better control over basic sentence boundaries.
