Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response addresses the task only minimally and presents a limited, somewhat inaccurate overview of the visual data. The writer attempts to summarize the information by describing various activities, but several key figures and trends are misread or misinterpreted. For example, stating that 'There were 70 perticipants in each activity' completely misinterprets the scale and values of the graph. Furthermore, data points and trends are inconsistently reported, and the overall selection of features lacks clarity and a fully developed perspective. To move towards a higher level, the response must accurately reflect the figures presented in the chart, present a clearer overview of the main trends without factual inaccuracies, and ensure all key data points are supported by the actual visual evidence rather than general or incorrect approximations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organization present, with separate paragraphs attempting to introduce the topic and report on different categories of data, but the response lacks an overall logical progression. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inappropriately, leading to a choppy and disjointed flow between sentences and paragraphs. For instance, transitional phrases like 'At first' and 'For the table tennis at firts' are repetitive and fail to guide the reader smoothly through the comparative trends over the two decades. Paragraphing is also somewhat arbitrary, with the second paragraph abruptly mixing general statements with inaccurate data. To achieve a higher standard, the writer needs to logically sequence information, use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices, and structure paragraphs so that each focuses on a clearly defined group of related data or overarching trends.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, containing noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some vocabulary related to data trends, such as 'significantly increase' and 'icreasing', but these are undermined by frequent spelling mistakes like 'illustates', 'verious', 'perticipants', 'constante', and 'firts'. Additionally, inappropriate word choices, such as calling participants 'candidate' or 'player' rather than general attendees or participants, restrict the precision of the response. To progress to a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, use precise terms suitable for academic data reporting, and pay careful attention to standard spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic past tense forms with frequent grammatical errors. There are frequent issues with verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as in 'Throughout 10 year it remain constante', 'number drop with 3 player', and 'number was kept droped'. Punctuation and articles are also handled inconsistently throughout the text. Complex sentence forms are rarely attempted, and when they are, they often contain structural flaws. To reach a higher level, the student needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures with a higher proportion of error-free sentences, while improving control over verb forms, plurals, and basic sentence construction.
