Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph compares changes in the numbers of participants of one social centre in Melbournem, Australlia for different activities between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, it is clear that the table tenis players significantly increased over the period, whereas the amateur dramtic participants followed the opposite trend. Meanwhile, the martial arts and film club participants showed a relatively stable pattern. It is also noticeable that the film club recorded the highest numbers of the participants at the end of the period, while the amateur dramtic participants had the lowest numbers.

looking first at the table tennis player, the figure stood at approximately 15 in 2000. After this, it continued to incrase, eventually reaching around 52 participants by 2020. Similarly, the amateur dramtic participants start at around 25 and followed a compareable opposite trend, falling to approixamtely 7 at the end of period.

Turing to the film club and martial arts, the figures were approximately 68 and 38 at the begining of the period. It is subsequently increased to 69 and 39 by 2020. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of the main trends and selecting key data points to report. For example, the student correctly identifies that table tennis participants increased significantly while amateur dramatics saw a downward trend, supported by general figures like reaching around 52 by 2020. However, some aspects of the task are addressed more fully than others, and certain details are slightly under-developed or imprecise. For instance, the reference to musical performances starting at zero in 2005 rather than 2000 misses the initial starting point of the series. To move to a higher band, the writer should ensure all data points are cited with greater accuracy and that trends are supported by a fully developed selection of specific figures across the entire timeline without minor omissions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical arrangement, moving from an introductory overview into detailed body paragraphs grouped by activity. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different features of the chart. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "whereas", "Meanwhile", and "By contrast", which helps guide the reader through the comparisons. However, cohesion is at times slightly mechanical or repetitive in its sentence-opening transitions, such as "looking first at" and "Turing to". Referencing is generally clear, though referencing control could be smoother to achieve a fully seamless flow. To reach the next band, the student should employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices while maintaining natural referencing throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic trends and comparisons using terms like "increased", "stable pattern", and "opposite trend". The writer also attempts less common vocabulary items such as "significantly" and "comparable". However, there are notable spelling errors and inaccuracies in word choice throughout the response, such as "Melbournem", "Australlia", "tenis", "dramtic", "incrase", "compareable", "approixamtely", "Turing", and "performer". These lexical slips and spelling mistakes do not prevent communication, but they restrict the response from achieving a higher score. To improve in this criterion, the writer needs to expand the range of vocabulary, use less common items with greater precision, and exercise much tighter control over spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, using dependent clauses and comparative structures effectively, such as in "while the amateur dramtic participants had the lowest numbers." There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement and article use, such as "the table tennis player" (instead of players), "start at" (instead of started), and "at end of the period" (missing an article). Despite these occasional errors, the structures are generally clear and rarely impede communication. To reach a higher band, the writer must demonstrate a wider variety of complex structures with frequent error-free sentences and ensure closer adherence to grammatical rules regarding tense consistency and articles.
