Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the main parts of the task by reporting on the activities over the twenty-year period, but it suffers from several inaccuracies regarding the data. For instance, the writer states that Martial arts 'remained at 40 members from 2000 to 2020 with no increase in popularity' when the figures fluctuate between 32 and 38. Additionally, the overview section contains a contradiction, mistakenly claiming that Martial arts gained the most numbers of people while simultaneously stating in the body that Table tennis achieved the highest growth. Some ideas are under-developed or inaccurately supported, pulling the task achievement score down to this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay presents a recognizable overall structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion, but the logical progression is hindered by mechanical and repetitive cohesive devices. Words like 'While' and 'However' are sometimes used abruptly or introduced with punctuation errors (e.g., 'While,In'). Paragraphing is present, but the internal flow of ideas lacks seamless transitions. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as ambiguous pronouns, which means the organisation remains basic and lacks the clear progression required for higher bands.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, featuring basic terms like 'amount of people', 'hobbies', and 'participants'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'reputation' instead of popularity and 'contestants' instead of participants, but these word choices are somewhat unnatural or imprecise in this academic context. There are also occasional word-form and spelling errors, such as 'reamined' and 'Amateuur', though these do not completely impede communication. To improve, the student needs to use more precise domain-specific collocations and ensure accurate spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student uses a limited range of sentence structures, primarily relying on simple sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions or faulty complex structures. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as tense inconsistencies, missing or incorrect prepositions, and punctuation mistakes (e.g., 'it goes from' instead of 'went from', missing spaces after commas, and 'much membershps'). These errors require the reader to work harder to understand the intended meaning, reflecting the typical constraints of this grammar band.
