Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word length requirement of 150 words, stopping abruptly at just 98 words due to being incomplete. Consequently, it only partially addresses the task. While the introduction correctly identifies the subject matter and the overall overview captures the general trends of the film club and amateur dramatics, the body of the report is severely truncated. The student attempts to describe the data for 2000 but cuts off mid-sentence, preventing any meaningful discussion of the remaining years, key comparisons, or the full set of categories shown in the graph. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure the response is fully developed and meets the required word count by thoroughly reporting all main features and comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some basic organisation, opening with an introductory sentence and attempting an overall summary paragraph. However, because the text cuts off prematurely, there is no clear overall progression across the essay. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes mechanically applied, as seen in the phrase 'Overall, it is clear that,'. Paragraphing is partially initiated, but the unfinished nature of the text disrupts logical flow and structural development. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer needs to structure the response into a logical sequence of paragraphs that guide the reader smoothly from an introduction and overview through to fully elaborated body paragraphs with adequate linking devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, featuring appropriate topic-specific terms such as 'participants', 'activities', and names of specific clubs like 'Film club' and 'Amateur dramatics'. There are some lexical inaccuracies and awkward expressions, such as 'film club participants in 63 number', which reveal a limited control of collocation and word formation. Spelling is generally acceptable for the words attempted, but the restricted vocabulary range and lack of less common lexical items prevent the writing from achieving a higher score. Expanding the repertoire of descriptive vocabulary and learning precise collocations for reporting statistical data will help elevate this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The text displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple constructions and basic introductory clauses. There are noticeable grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('at social centre') and awkward phrasing in quantitative statements ('participants in 63 number'), which reflect a lack of control when attempting to formulate precise structural patterns. Punctuation is also occasionally faulty, including unnecessary commas like 'it is clear that,'. Because the response is unfinished, the complexity of grammatical structures remains restricted. To improve, the writer should practice forming accurate complex sentences with correct prepositional phrases, verb forms, and article usage.
