Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response achieves a partial overview by identifying the film club and amateur dramatics as the most and least popular activities respectively, and it touches upon general trends. However, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 137 words, falling short of the 150-word minimum once copied prompt words are excluded. Furthermore, the selection of data contains significant inaccuracies and unsupported percentages, such as claiming table tennis started at 12% and rose to 50%, or that amateur dramatics started at 25%, misinterpreting the absolute number scale of participants provided in the visual data. To reach a higher band, the student must meet the minimum word count and accurately report data directly from the chart without inventing percentages.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response presents some basic organization with an introductory overview and a body paragraph structure, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'furthermore', 'moreover', and 'consequently', which do not always suit the logical relationships between the sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph is extremely brief and repetitive, echoing points already made in the introduction. To improve, the student needs to ensure logical linking between sentences and develop each body paragraph with cohesive clarity rather than repeating summary statements at the end.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic summary, featuring terms such as 'participation', 'popular', 'rose gradually', and 'fluctuated'. However, the range is limited and repetitive, and there are notable vocabulary inaccuracies and misuse of units, such as treating raw participant numbers as percentages ('12%', '50%', '25%', '15%'). Spelling is generally acceptable, but word choices lack precision. To move to a higher band, the student should incorporate a wider range of less common lexical items related to data trends and ensure correct units and collocations are used consistently throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many complex or descriptive constructions contain errors, such as 'In 2020 film club recorded' (missing article) and 'Musical performances started at beginning point and then it increased' (awkward phrasing and missing article). Frequent errors in punctuation, articles, and prepositional use emerge, which occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the student must demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, ensure correct article usage with noun phrases, and minimize structural errors in complex sentences.
