Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response satisfies the requirements by covering all parts of the task and presenting a clear overview of the main trends across the five activities. The student selects key data points to report, such as the popularity of the film club and the dramatic rise in table tennis. However, some aspects of the response reflect the characteristics of a half-band by not fully developing every detail. For example, specific fluctuations within the martial arts series are reported with some minor inaccuracies in data reporting compared to the source graph, and the overview could be slightly more expansive regarding the overall relationships between categories. To reach the next band, the student should ensure all selected data points are entirely accurate and provide a more fully extended commentary on the broader trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into logical paragraphs, separating the overview and the individual body paragraphs for different activities. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'Regarding film club', and 'Table tennis recorded'. However, cohesion occasionally feels mechanical or slightly repetitive in structure, and referencing between sentences could be smoother. For instance, transitional phrases feel formulaic rather than naturally integrated. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that the progression of ideas from one sentence to the next is entirely seamless without relying on predictable signposts.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The lexical resource used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying numerical data and trends with vocabulary such as 'participants', 'decreased slightly', 'sharp increase', and 'gradual decrease'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'preferred' and 'significantly'. Nevertheless, there are some word-choice and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'activites' instead of activities, 'muscial' instead of musical, and 'untill' instead of until. Furthermore, phrasing like 'least preferred activity' could be more idiomatic. To move up to the next band, the student must expand their range of less common lexical items, maintain greater precision in word choice, and eliminate basic spelling slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as time clauses ('between 2000 to 2020') and relative or participial modifications. There are several grammatical errors present, including missing articles ('at social centre', 'is least common activity'), prepositions ('decrease in the following years reached to 8'), and punctuation omissions. While these errors do not seriously impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to characterize this level of control. To reach the next band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex structures with higher accuracy, producing a higher proportion of error-free sentences and polishing control over articles and verb agreement.
