Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response makes an attempt to summarise the main features of the graph, identifying key activities such as the film club and table tennis, and providing an overview at the beginning. However, the task is only partially addressed because several descriptions are confusing, inaccurate, or poorly supported by the data. For instance, the claim that musical performances started at zero in 2000 and 2005 is correct, but statements regarding trends in amateur dramatics and martial arts lack clarity and precision. Some ideas are underdeveloped, and the overall reporting of data points contains inaccuracies, such as misinterpreting the fluctuations and final values of several series. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to select and report the main trends much more accurately, ensuring that all comparisons are factually correct and clearly presented.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text demonstrates some general organisation with an introductory overview and separate body paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, with awkward transitions such as 'If we compared the martial arts activity that also constant' and 'In contrast, amateur dramatics activity'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of paragraphs lacks logical linking, making the progression difficult to follow at times. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as pronoun use and ambiguous connectors. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more accurately and ensure that each sentence flows logically into the next, maintaining a clear and easy-to-follow structure throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and just minimally adequate for the task. There is an over-reliance on basic terms and frequent errors in word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'canidates' instead of 'candidates', 'higest' instead of 'highest', 'intrested', 'guadually', and 'began' used as a noun. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'approximately stable' and 'upward sharply', these attempts often result in unnatural collocations or ungrammatical phrases. These noticeable errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, learn correct word forms and spellings, and practice using precise lexical items related to data trends, such as 'fluctuate', 'decline', and 'significant'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences or faulty attempts at complex ones. Frequent grammatical errors are present throughout the text, including missing verbs (e.g., 'The graph illustrate'), incorrect verb tenses, poor preposition usage, and missing articles. For example, phrases like 'the activity in amateur dramatics few canidates added in the began' and 'participants stable in 2000 to 2005' exhibit serious structural flaws that cause considerable difficulty for the reader. Control over basic grammatical patterns is weak. To reach the next level, the writer needs to practice forming accurate simple and complex sentences, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, and ensure correct tense consistency when describing past statistical data.
