Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a rudimentary summary of the visual data. The candidate attempts to report several main features and trends, such as the overall trajectory of the film club and table tennis, but the information lacks clarity and contains factual inaccuracies regarding specific data points. For instance, the student states that the film club was '64 percent' and rose to '67 percent', misinterpreting the absolute numbers on the y-axis as percentages, and misreading the final value. Furthermore, the overview is overly simplistic, and some key activities, such as musical performances, are only vaguely described ('Musical performances was zero at 2000 and 2005 after that gradually increase'). To reach a higher level, the response needs to select and accurately report key trends across all categories without misinterpreting units, and provide a coherent, fully developed overview of the main developments shown in the graph.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, but the text lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is disjointed, and the second paragraph ('Actually, the given data tells...') feels like a confused false start rather than a structured body of its own. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as the repetitive use of 'then' to chain clauses together ('then fall little after that in 2020 was rose to...', 'then rose to 28 in 2005 after that decrease dramatically'). Reference pronouns and signposting are weak, causing the information to feel lumped together rather than logically sequenced. To improve cohesion, the writer should group related activities purposefully, ensure smooth transitions between sentences without over-relying on basic sequential words, and structure the paragraphs so that each has a distinct focus.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts to use some less common words and trend-related vocabulary, but this is hampered by frequent errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'amateur dramatics is fall', 'was on peak', and 'suddendly increase'. The erroneous inclusion of percentage signs ('64 percent', '36 percent') throughout the response demonstrates a misunderstanding of the units of measurement. Spelling and morphological errors also occur ('suddendly'). While the reader can generally grasp the broad topics being discussed, these noticeable lexical inaccuracies and limitations restrict the response. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to use a wider and more precise range of vocabulary suitable for describing graphical data, such as appropriate nouns and verbs of change, and eliminate basic word-form errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences or poorly constructed clauses joined by commas. Attempts at complex or longer sentences frequently result in faulty structures and frequent errors in verb tense, agreement, and prepositions. Examples include 'the given line graph gives the information on', 'film club, table tennis, musical performances was on peak', and '10 percent grew in 2010 and increasing till 2020'. Punctuation is also weak, with run-on sentences lacking appropriate boundaries. These frequent grammatical errors cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth comprehension. To progress, the student must demonstrate better control over basic sentence construction, ensure subject-verb agreement, accurately apply tense forms when describing past data, and incorporate a wider variety of accurate complex structures.
