The graph illustrates the details on the amount of participants for various activities, namely film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performances at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia in the time period between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, the film club remained as the most popular activity throughout the time period, while table tennis experienced significant rise in the participants since 2010. In contrast, martial arts and amateur dramatics saw declines, and musical performances saw an upward trend.

The film club consistently had the highest number of participants, starting at 63 in 2000 and slightly increased to 65 by 2020. Martial arts began with 35 participants in 2000 went onto slight fluctuations and remained close to 30 by 2020. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and key comparisons for all five activities shown in the visual data. The overview clearly highlights the overall trends, noting the enduring popularity of the film club and the significant rise in table tennis. Key data points are accurately selected and cited, such as the starting and ending figures for amateur dramatics and the emergence of musical performances. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or minor imprecisions in quoting specific figures, such as stating musical performances reached around 15 participants in 2020 when the chart shows closer to 18. Ideas are well extended and supported throughout, sitting comfortably within the expected level for a clear, comprehensive overview of graphic data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates clear logical organization and progression from the introduction through the overview to the detailed body paragraphs. Each paragraph has a clear central focus, grouping related activities logically, such as contrasting declining categories with rising ones. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and appropriately to connect ideas and guide the reader smoothly through the data, exemplified by transitional phrases like 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'In addition'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively, separating the introduction, overview, and specific data groupings. While referencing and substitution are generally clear and managed well, a minor improvement in seamless transitional flow would elevate the text further. Overall, the structure remains coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The writer employs a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision to describe trends and changes effectively, using less common items such as 'predominant growth', 'downward trend', and 'fluctuated'. Word choices are generally appropriate for an academic report, though occasional minor errors in collocation or word choice occur, such as writing 'the amount of participants' instead of 'the number of participants' and 'significant rise in the participants'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher level, the student could incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated lexical chunks and ensure absolute precision in prepositions and noun phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with a good attempt at incorporating subordinate clauses and varied structures. There is good control over punctuation, and many sentences are entirely error-free, reflecting solid command. However, a few persistent grammatical errors remain, such as awkward verb phrasing ('went onto slight fluctuations and remained close') and minor tense or article inaccuracies. These errors rarely impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a fully polished profile. To reach the next tier, the student needs to eliminate lingering grammatical slips and demonstrate more consistent control over complex syntactic structures.
