Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the graph, presenting a clear overview of the overall trends. For instance, you correctly noted that the film club maintained the highest participation levels overall, while table tennis experienced significant growth. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in specific data points; for example, stating that martial arts reached 'almost 40' in 2000 and 2010 overlooks the exact figures provided in the prompt (36 and 38 respectively). To reach a higher band, you should ensure that specific data points are reported with greater precision and that comparisons between categories are more fully extended.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introduction to an overview and subsequent body paragraphs detailing specific timeframes. You make use of cohesive devices to structure your writing, such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', 'Whereas', and 'On the contrary'. However, cohesion is at times a bit mechanical or faulty, and referencing can occasionally be unclear, as seen in the transition between paragraphs where the flow of data points feels slightly disjointed. To achieve a higher score, you should ensure that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and that each paragraph flows seamlessly into the next, maintaining a clear and logical thread throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'significant growth', 'flactuated', and 'momentous growth'. However, there are noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'participator' instead of 'participants', 'ameture' instead of 'amateur', and 'flactuated' instead of 'fluctuated', along with word choice inaccuracies like 'diminished a lot'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, placing your lexical control at this level. To improve, you need to expand your range of less common vocabulary and improve your spelling and precision in word choice and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structure. You attempted various tenses to describe past trends, such as 'had declined' and 'showed a significant growth'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tense consistency, subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'participations in amateur dramatic had declined'), and missing articles or prepositions. These errors can sometimes cause difficulty for the reader. To move up to a higher band, you need to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate better control over complex grammatical structures and punctuation.
