Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview of the main trends and selecting key features from the line graph, such as the dominance of the film club and the dramatic surge in table tennis. It fully satisfies the requirements for a higher band by presenting a clear overall summary. However, it sits at this level because some details are slightly underdeveloped or lack specific data points, such as not mentioning the exact peak of the film club or the precise starting figures for other categories. The comparisons made between activities are relevant and generally accurate, demonstrating a good understanding of the visual data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs detailing specific trends. Information and ideas are logically sequenced, allowing the reader to follow the progression of the data across the specified time period. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall, it is clear from the graph that' and 'Furthermore, it is observed that'. However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical, and referencing could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the response, though the links between sentences could be refined to achieve a more natural flow characteristic of higher bands.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the general trends and movements shown in the chart. The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'upsurged', 'fluctuations', and 'drastic decline', which shows an effort to vary word choice. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'individuals who were participated' instead of 'participants', and 'get upsurged' instead of 'surged'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Spelling is generally accurate, and the range of vocabulary is sufficient to complete the task effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and subordinate structures. There are several grammatical errors present, such as passive voice misuse ('were participated'), missing articles ('in Film club activity'), and punctuation issues regarding run-on clauses. For instance, the sentence starting with 'Overall, it is clear...' is overly long and lacks appropriate punctuation breaks. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear. To reach the next band, the student needs to demonstrate a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and better control over verb forms and prepositions.
