Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features, and making relevant comparisons. For example, the student correctly identifies that the film club had the most participants overall and that musical performances started at zero. However, some ideas are under-developed or imprecise; the student mentions that martial arts started from '25 members' when the chart clearly shows around 36, and the overview generalises that musical performances attracted the 'least number of people' without fully qualifying the timeframe. To reach a higher band, the student should ensure data points are accurately transcribed from the visual prompt and provide fully extended descriptions for all key trends rather than rushing through minor details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to group information logically by activity and time periods. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is occasionally unclear. For instance, the transition 'On contrast' contains a minor preposition error, and the single-paragraph body block forces all data together without adequate paragraphing to separate distinct trends. Pronoun referencing and signposting words could be managed more skilfully to guide the reader smoothly. To achieve a higher band, the student must organise the text into clear paragraphs—such as a dedicated overview paragraph and separate body paragraphs for rising and stable trends—and use a wider, more natural variety of cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and trend-related phrasing such as 'steady performance', 'rose', and 'huge spike'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and expression, such as 'attracted least number of people' (missing an article), 'visitors at starting', and minor data misinterpretations. Spelling is generally acceptable and communication is rarely impeded. To move up to the next band, the student needs to use a wider range of sophisticated vocabulary with greater precision, ensuring that collocations are completely natural and that less common lexical items are used without awkward phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and time-phrase introductions. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, such as missing articles ('attracted least number', 'ended on 55 players almost'), faulty prepositions ('between years', 'at starting'), and run-on sentences lacking proper punctuation (e.g. 'Table tennis in year 2000 had...'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication. To attain a higher band, the student must increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate better control over articles, prepositions, and sentence boundaries.
