Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph illustrates the relation between participants and their activities in a place located in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 to 2020.
Overall, activities involve film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performances. Over time, the consistent pattern is observed in the activities like film club and martial arts. However, a massive rise can be seen in the table tennis and musical performance activities. On the contrary, a dramatic decline is shown for the amateur dramatics.
The most dominating and uniform activity is film club, having just over 60 participants in 2000, and maintained its position in 2020. Similarly, martial arts starts from 35 participants and stood same in number for today. However a massive increase proved the popularity in a table tennis, rising from 15 participants in 2000 to 55 participants now a days. The same increasing line is observed for the musical performance and reached to around 20 participants. Among all of the activities, amateur dramatics faces a sharp decline from 25 participants to only 5 participants in recent year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and key comparisons across the five activities over the twenty-year period. Your overview clearly highlights the general patterns, such as the stability of the film club and martial arts, the significant growth in table tennis and musical performances, and the sharp decline in amateur dramatics. You have extended and supported your ideas with relevant data points, such as mentioning the film club maintaining just over 60 participants and table tennis rising significantly. However, there is a slight tendency to generalise or approximate figures loosely in places (such as 'stood same in number for today' or 'now a days'), which keeps the response at this level. To reach the next band, ensure that all key data points are cited with slightly greater precision and that comparisons between categories are even more fully integrated.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your writing displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the overview and the detailed body paragraphs. You make use of cohesive devices to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'However', 'On the contrary', and 'Similarly'. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, fulfilling the structural requirements of an academic report. To achieve a higher band, some of your cohesive referencing could be smoother and less mechanical, avoiding slightly repetitive transitional structures. Ensuring that every transition feels entirely natural and tightly links the analytical points will enhance the overall flow and elevate the cohesion of the essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'dominating', 'uniform', and 'dramatic decline'. There is a sufficient variety of terms to describe trends and changes effectively. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as writing 'the relation between participants and their activities' instead of 'participation rates' or 'number of participants in different activities', and using colloquial or imprecise phrases like 'now a days' and 'stood same in number'. Spelling is generally accurate, but upgrading your lexical precision and avoiding awkward phrasing will help you attain a higher band in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You show a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the response, utilizing subordinate clauses and participial phrases such as 'having just over 60 participants in 2000' and 'rising from 15 participants'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'activities involve film club' (which lacks correct article usage and tense consistency) and 'popular in a table tennis' (which contains an unnecessary article). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. To reach a higher band, you need to demonstrate greater control over complex sentence structures and eliminate minor slips in articles, prepositions, and verb tenses.
