Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and reporting the main features of the five activities from 2000 to 2020. You accurately highlighted that the film club was consistently the most popular, and you correctly noted the significant upward trend in table tennis alongside the decline in amateur dramatics. The figures provided, such as 64 for the film club in 2000 and 54 for table tennis in 2020, are well-supported by the visual data. However, the response tends to list individual data points consecutively without fully extending or synthesising the comparisons in places. To achieve a higher band, the selection of data could be more purposefully integrated to draw sharper comparative insights across the entire time period.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introductory overview to the detailed body data. However, your paragraphing is a noticeable weakness; the entire response is compressed into a single, massive paragraph instead of being broken down logically into an introduction, an overview, and distinct body paragraphs for group trends. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader through the data, such as 'In contrast' and 'before rising', but referencing and transitions occasionally feel mechanical. Structuring your writing into standard paragraphs would immediately improve the visual and logical flow of your ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
Your lexical range is adequate and sufficient for the task, allowing you to successfully describe trends and data points. You demonstrate an ability to use appropriate vocabulary related to statistical changes, such as 'increased significantly', 'decreased considerably', and 'rose sharply'. However, there are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as the spelling error 'numbee' and occasional awkward word choices like 'changed slightly' instead of 'fluctuated'. While you make some attempts at less common lexical items, minor slips in spelling and word form prevent this criterion from reaching the next level. Ensuring careful proofreading of your spelling and collocations will help elevate your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, frequently producing error-free sentences with solid control of past tense forms and time prepositions, as seen in sentences like 'It decreased to 32 in 2005, then rose to 38 in 2010.' Grammatical control and punctuation are generally good, but there are a few lingering mechanical errors, particularly missing spaces after commas and periods throughout the text, such as in 'Melbourne,Australia, from' and 'club. This figure'. These minor punctuation errors, combined with occasional simple structural patterns, mean that while your grammar is clear and rarely impedes communication, you need a greater variety of advanced complex clauses and flawless punctuation to reach the highest band.
