Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the graph, such as the film club remaining stable and table tennis increasing significantly. However, some ideas are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, the writer states that in 2000 the film club was at "approximately 72 count", whereas the chart shows it at around 64. Similarly, musical performances are described as starting at zero and reaching above 10, but the details lack precise integration with the overall trends. While an overview is attempted in the second and final paragraphs, some descriptions of the trends are vague or rely on faulty data interpretation, which places this aspect at the current level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to organise information into logical paragraphs with an introduction, body paragraphs, and an overview. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Devices such as "Overall," "In 2000," and "Eventually" are used, but referencing and linking within sentences are weak, leading to abrupt transitions and unclear relationships between ideas. For example, sentences like "In contrast of musical performances were zero participanted" lack smooth logical progression. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion needs tighter control and more accurate use of transition markers to achieve a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The writer attempts an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words related to data trends such as "stable", "fluctuated", and "dramatically increased". However, there are noticeable lexical errors, awkward word choices, and spelling mistakes throughout the text, such as "Austraila", "candidates" used instead of participants, "amateour", and "participanted". Less common lexical items are attempted with some inaccuracy, and these errors occasionally cause strain for the reader. To reach a higher level, the student needs to use precise vocabulary suited to task 1 reporting and eliminate spelling and word-formation errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, but control is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb tenses, prepositions, and sentence construction, such as "different activities happened at one social centre", "film club on highest", and "started declined". Punctuation is also erratic, with missing commas and run-on structures. These errors require some effort to decode but rarely completely impede communication. To improve, the writer must focus on accurate tense usage for past data, correct prepositional phrases, and forming error-free complex sentences.
