Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting an overview of some key features from the line graph while missing others entirely, such as a complete omission of the film club data overview. Some information provided is inaccurate or confusingly expressed, such as claiming the film club reached 65 in 2000 and then dropped to 60 in 2010 when the graph shows a more nuanced trend, or stating that musical performances started at 0 and reached 15 in 2020 when the graph indicates 18. Furthermore, the selection of data is erratic, and the description of trends lacks clarity. To reach a higher band, the writer must ensure all major trends are accurately reported, select relevant data systematically without misreading figures, and present a clear, coherent overview of the main overall patterns shown in the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some basic organisation in the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The essay is broken into paragraphs, but the logical flow between sentences is frequently disjointed. Cohesive devices are used very mechanically or are entirely absent, leading to abrupt shifts between different activities and years. For instance, sentences are strung together awkwardly using basic connectors like 'whereas' and 'later' without proper structural control. Referencing is also confusing, making it difficult for the reader to follow which activity is being compared at various points. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer needs to group related data logically into well-defined paragraphs, use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices to connect ideas smoothly, and ensure that each sentence builds clearly on the previous one.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, showing frequent lapses in word choice and spelling. The writer attempts some less common items or topic-specific terms like 'participants', 'activities', and 'social centre', but these are often accompanied by noticeable errors or awkward collocations, such as 'significance activities', 'catogories', 'hugh increase', and 'amateus dramatics'. Spelling errors are also present, which detracts from the overall quality of the writing. To achieve a higher band, the writer should expand their vocabulary range by learning precise terms for describing statistical trends, such as verbs of change and their corresponding adverbs, and pay closer attention to word formation, spelling, and correct collocations in academic contexts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The writer uses a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and failing to construct complex sentences accurately. There are frequent errors in grammar and sentence structure throughout the response, such as missing verbs ('the martial arts 36 number of participants'), incorrect prepositions, and awkward clause constructions ('where as the film club the 65 highest number of the participants... and it become 60'). These persistent errors can cause difficulty for the reader in grasping the intended meaning. To move up to the next band, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic sentence architecture, ensure subject-verb agreement, use verbs and tenses consistently when describing past data, and develop the ability to produce error-free complex sentences.
