Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response makes an attempt to present the information from the graph, but it only partially addresses the task requirements. While the introduction identifies the general topic, location, and timeframe, the selection of data points contains notable inaccuracies and confusion. For example, the description of the film club incorrectly states that '5 of them are left after the ten years' and contains contradictory figures regarding the maximum. Furthermore, the overview provided in the second paragraph is overly simplistic and fails to highlight the most salient trends clearly. To move closer to a higher band, the response needs to report key data points and trends much more accurately and provide a more coherent overview of the main developments across all categories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response displays some basic organization by dividing the content into paragraphs, including an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to different activities. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression throughout the text. The transitions between sentences feel mechanical and disjointed, and the use of cohesive devices is rather basic and sometimes repetitive. For instance, sentences often begin abruptly without smooth linking phrases to connect ideas logically. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the writer should ensure that ideas flow more naturally from one to the next, using a wider variety of cohesive markers and referencing devices appropriately to guide the reader through the data comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer makes several attempts to incorporate less common vocabulary, but these are often marred by spelling mistakes and inaccurate word choices, such as 'Material arts' instead of 'Martial arts', 'amateur damatics' instead of 'amateur dramatics', and 'maximam' instead of 'maximum'. Additionally, expressions like 'most participants' and 'reachs' show a restricted range of lexical control. To improve in this criterion, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary range, pay closer attention to accurate spelling, and use word forms and collocations more precisely when describing statistical data and trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response employs a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic subject-verb patterns. When the writer attempts more complex formulations, frequent grammatical errors occur, such as tense inconsistencies ('at 2000 they start', 'member reaches'), article omissions, and prepositions inside grammatical patterns ('in those years', 'at that time'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress to a higher band, the writer should aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy, ensuring better control over verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and basic punctuation.
