Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph provides the data on number of participants for five different activities at a social centre over a period of 20 years, from 2000 to 2020 in Melbourne, an Australian city.

Overall, participation in film club remained the highest, while amateur dramatics was the lowest over the end of the period. Table tennis saw a sharp increase, whereas martial arts remained largely the same with some ups and downs over the period.

Film club was the most preferred activity in 2000 with almost 65 individuals taking part in it, while table tennis was just at 18, lowest of all. Film club participation saw a decline with 60 participants in 2010, but recovered quickly to rise to the previous data of 65 in 2020. Table tennis rose sharply after staying consistent at 20 for 5 years to a maximum of 55 participants in 2020, taking over amateur dramatics and martial arts respectively.

Amateur dramatics saw huge decline after reaching its peak in 2005 at 30 participations, after which it linearly fell over the years and came crashing down at just over 5 participations in 2020. Martial arts performed significantly well with keeping its participation count in 2000 and 2020 almost the same, while it had it's ups and downs over the period. The most interesting of all was the musical performances activity which started in 2005 and increased over time to become consistent at just under 20 participations in 2015 and in 2020 as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and reporting the main features of the line graph. Key trends, such as the dominance of the film club and the dramatic surge in table tennis participation, are accurately highlighted and supported with data from the text. The writer makes relevant comparisons between the activities across the twenty-year span. However, the response tends to over-generalize or slightly misstate certain endpoint details, such as claiming amateur dramatics reached its peak in 2005 at 30 when the gridline shows around 28, and stating it came crashing down at just over 5 rather than precisely 6. These minor inaccuracies prevent the response from achieving a higher band, keeping it firmly at the current level where the main trends are covered well but some details lack precise precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The writing exhibits a clear overall progression, guiding the reader logically from the introduction through the main overview and into detailed body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph dedicated to grouping specific activities or trends together. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "whereas", "while", and "after which", although some referencing and transitional links feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the repeated use of "over the period". Additionally, pronoun referencing in places lacks absolute clarity. To reach a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate more sophisticated and flexible cohesive management, ensuring that transitions between sentences and paragraphs flow more naturally and unobtrusively.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as "participations", "fluctuated", and descriptive phrases like "came crashing down". However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies that reveal limitations at this level. For instance, using "participations" as a countable noun plural is unnatural in this context; "participants" or "participation numbers" would be more appropriate. Other phrasing like "took over amateur dramatics and martial arts respectively" misapplies standard comparative structures. Spelling is generally accurate, but these lexical slips and awkward collocations restrict the score, showing an attempt at style that is not yet fully controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a workable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully employing subordinate clauses and participial phrases to report trends. There is reasonable control over verb tenses used to describe past data spanning from 2000 to 2020. However, a persistent presence of grammatical errors prevents a higher rating. There are articles missing or misused in places, such as "provides the data on number of participants" instead of "on the number", and occasional preposition or agreement lapses, such as "while it had it's ups and downs" where an apostrophe error occurs alongside a clunky phrasing. Complex structures are attempted, but they occasionally result in awkward syntax or minor errors that require the reader to pause slightly, characteristic of this grammatical level.
