Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph illustrates the change in the number of people who took part in different activities: film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis, and musical performance in a social centre in an Australian city, Melbourne between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, film club was the largest adopted activity, while amateur dramatics decreased dramatically and accounted for the minimal figure over the period. Table tennis rose significantly and overlapped amateur dramatics and martial arts over twenty years.

In 2000, the figure for film club started from 65, followed by some minor fluctuation and reached just above 66, in 2020. Followed by martial arts, which started from 36, experienced some peaks and troughs but remained unchanged at the end. Furthermore, musical performance started in 2005 and reached to around 15 at the end.

Starting figure for table tennis in 2000 was approximately 16 and reached to 20 and by overlapping amteur dramatics rose rapidly to

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response covers the main trends in the visual data, noting the film club's dominance and the sharp contrast between table tennis and amateur dramatics. However, the response is incomplete because it cuts off mid-sentence, leaving the final body paragraph unfinished. While an overview is provided, the data reporting lacks thorough development for some categories, and the abrupt ending prevents a fully rounded summary of the information.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates some organisation through an introductory paragraph and an overview. However, there is no clear overall progression due to the incomplete ending and abrupt truncation of the final paragraph. Cohesive devices are attempted, such as 'Overall', 'Furthermore', and 'Starting figure', but referencing and logical flow between sentences are occasionally mechanical or repetitive, leading to a disjointed feel in places.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate and generally appropriate for the task, with correct attempts at describing trends such as 'minor fluctuation', 'peaks and troughs', and 'rose rapidly'. There are some slight inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'largest adopted activity' instead of the most popular activity, and a spelling error ('amteur'). Nonetheless, the lexical range is sufficient to convey the general meaning without impeding the reader's understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is inconsistent. There are frequent structural issues and awkward phrasings, such as 'started from 65... reached just above 66, in 2020' and 'reached to around 15 at the end'. Prepositions and verb tenses are sometimes handled inaccurately, and the unfinished sentence at the end reflects a limitation in grammatical control under pressure.
