IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph illustrates data on total number of participants for different activities ( film club, martial art, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performances) in Melbourne from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, table tennis had the highest participation growth. In contrast, amateur dramatics saw the least participation by the final year. Participants of film club remained relatively stable throughout the period. Remaining two activities saw slight rise and dip in their participants.
Participants of film club started about 63 in 2000, remained stable throughout the period approximately 64. Table tennis participants were about 16 in the year 2000, but increased sharply by the year 2015 and reached above 50 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response covers some of the main features of the graph, such as noting that table tennis had the highest growth and that film club participation remained stable. However, the task is only partially addressed because the length requirement is not met, with the word count falling well short of the 150-word minimum. Furthermore, some of the data points and trends are under-developed or omitted, such as a full treatment of martial arts and musical performances, which prevents a more thorough comparison across all categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression, starting with an introductory overview, followed by general trends, and then moving into specific data details. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesion is generally clear, though referencing and cohesive devices feel somewhat mechanical at times, such as the transition into the final paragraph, preventing the response from reaching a higher level of fluency.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'highest participation growth' and 'increased sharply'. There are some minor word-choice and prepositional issues, such as omitting articles or awkward phrasing like 'Participants of film club', but these errors do not impede communication. The range is sufficient to convey the main trends clearly without straining the reader's understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable attempt at structuring comparative sentences. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('the total number', 'the film club') and minor agreement slips, but these errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication. The control over sentence patterns is stable enough to ensure the meaning remains mostly clear throughout.
