Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the main parts of the task by covering several key trends and figures from the line graph, such as the dominance of the Film club and the rise of Table tennis. However, some ideas are under-developed or inaccurately reported, and certain years are omitted or misread from the data (for instance, stating that Amateur dramatics reached 13 in 2015 and 9 in 2020, whereas the graph shows different figures). An overview is attempted at the beginning, but it lacks clarity regarding the overall trajectory of all categories. To move to a higher band, the student should ensure all selected data points are accurately transcribed and provide a more comprehensive overview of the main trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to organise information logically, using transition phrases like "Turning to the details" and "Turning to the remaining details" to guide the reader. However, cohesion can feel mechanical and repetitive. Furthermore, paragraphing is underdeveloped, as the entire body of the report is clumped into two massive blocks rather than being separated logically by category or time period. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making the flow bumpy in places. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ more diverse and natural cohesive devices, structure the text into clear, distinct paragraphs (such as an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for specific groups), and ensure logical progression throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate to communicate the basic points of the task, with attempts at less common items such as "immense participates," "dramatically decreased," and "enormous increase." However, there are noticeable word-form errors and awkward collocations, such as "numbers of participants took part" instead of 'number of participants taking part' and "immense participates" instead of 'immense participation'. Spelling errors also occur intermittently. To improve lexical resource, the student must focus on accurate word forms (nouns versus verbs versus adjectives) and learn standard collocations used in data reports, such as 'significant drop' or 'sharp increase'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak, featuring frequent errors that frequently distract the reader. There are persistent issues with verb forms and tenses, such as "many people were participated" instead of 'many people participated', run-on sentences with missing punctuation, and awkward relative clauses. Articles and prepositions are also frequently misused. To progress to a higher band, the student needs to reduce basic grammatical errors, improve sentence boundary control to avoid run-on structures, and demonstrate more reliable control over passive voice and past tense reporting verbs.
