Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and reporting the main trends and comparisons. Key features are accurately identified, such as the significant upward trajectory of table tennis and the steady decline in amateur dramatics. The selection of data is generally accurate, though minor data inaccuracies occur, such as stating that table tennis started at approximately 18 when the graph shows around 16. Ideas are well-supported with figures from the chart, meeting the expectations for a solid performance, though some minor details could have been further extended to reach a higher level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The writing demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organization. Information is grouped reasonably well into paragraphs, starting with an introduction and overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing specific activities. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'in contrast', and 'regarding' are used to connect ideas, though some transitional phrasing feels slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, but referencing between sentences occasionally lacks absolute fluidity, preventing the text from reaching a fully seamless flow. The bridge to the next band requires more sophisticated and natural integration of cohesive markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'upward trajectory' and 'fluctuated'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as 'recoded' instead of 'recorded' and 'reached it peak' instead of 'its peak'. While these minor errors do not impede communication, they reflect the typical constraints of this band level. To achieve a higher score, the vocabulary needs to be deployed with greater precision and a wider variety of less common academic collocations should be incorporated consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and introductory dependent clauses successfully. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, including awkward passive constructions like 'who were participated', missing articles or pluralization issues, and occasional preposition errors. Punctuation is generally functional, but these persistent errors in basic and intermediate grammar structures mean that error-free sentences are not frequent enough to secure a higher band. Improving verb form control and eliminating basic slip-ups will elevate this criterion.
