Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the task by identifying overall trends and highlighting key data points, such as the popularity of the film club and the sharp decline in amateur dramatics. However, some aspects of the task are handled less fully or contain inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the text states that amateur dramatics fell from 38 in 2000 to just 8 members in 2020, whereas the graph indicates starting at around 26 and ending near 6. Additionally, the overview and body paragraphs focus heavily on individual details rather than drawing out all significant comparisons across the categories. To move higher, the response would need to ensure greater factual accuracy when citing figures and provide a more fully developed, balanced overview of all five categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the writing into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. There is a logical progression of ideas from general statements to specific category details. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. For example, the transitional phrase 'Starting, with most famous activity' is awkward and disrupts the flow, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous phrasing regarding 'former' and 'later'. Paragraphing is used, but the third body paragraph is overly dense and attempts to group too many disparate comparisons together. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ cohesive devices more naturally and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'highly populated', 'fluctuated', and 'sudden rise'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'most famous activity' instead of 'most popular category', and spelling slips like 'memebrs' and 'Conversly'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they reflect limitations in word choice and control over spelling. To improve, the writer should expand their repertoire of academic collocations, refine the precision of descriptive verbs and adjectives, and carefully proofread for spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. There are, however, some recurring errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include punctuation errors such as unnecessary commas ('Starting, with most famous activity'), missing articles ('in last year' instead of 'in the last year'), and prepositional issues ('reached at the peak'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning generally remains clear. To reach a higher band, the writer must increase control over complex sentence patterns, refine article usage, and eliminate intrusive punctuation errors.
