Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting an overview and covering the trends for all five activities shown in the graph. The overview successfully highlights the main features, noting that the Film club remained dominant while Table tennis and Musical performances experienced significant increases, whereas Amateur dramatics declined. However, some details are slightly inaccurate or under-developed; for instance, the writer states that Amateur dramatics reached approximately 8 participants by the end of the period when the graph shows around 6. Furthermore, the final paragraph unnecessarily repeats information already stated. To achieve a higher band, the response would need to ensure greater precision in reporting all specific data points and avoid repetitive concluding summaries.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to group information logically by activity, with a clear introductory paragraph and an overview. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and awkward, particularly in how sentences are linked within the body paragraph. The overuse of transitional phrases like 'after that' and 'subsequently' creates a repetitive rhythm rather than a smooth logical progression. Paragraphing is also somewhat unconventional, as the final summary is isolated into a very brief single-sentence paragraph. To reach the next level, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices without repetition and ensure that paragraph structures are fully developed and logically balanced.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic trends through words such as 'dominant', 'fluctuations', 'downfall', and 'gradually'. However, there are numerous noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'club' misspelled as 'clud', 'subsequently' as 'subsiquently', 'amateur' as 'amature', and 'Malbourne'. Additionally, awkward phrasing such as 'experienced high rise' and 'attract 12 participants' limits precision. These lexical errors and awkward collocations occasionally distract the reader. To move up to a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, use less common vocabulary more accurately, and eliminate recurring spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as time clauses and contrastive connectors. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent, with frequent errors including missing articles ('at social centre', 'from table tennis'), incorrect prepositions ('overall the period' instead of 'over the period'), subject-verb agreement issues ('film clud remain', 'it observe fluctations'), and run-on sentences with missing punctuation. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the overall accuracy of the writing. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to produce a greater proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate tighter control over tense consistency and basic grammatical structures.
