Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task by reporting several features from the chart, but the information provided is partially inaccurate and poorly selected. For example, the overview contains a major confusion by stating that musical performances had the highest number of participants, which directly contradicts the visual data showing that the film club consistently had the highest numbers while musical performances had the lowest. Furthermore, some data points are misread or confused throughout the body paragraphs, such as the initial values for table tennis and amateur dramatics. Ideas are limited and under-developed, lacking a clear and accurate summary of the main trends across the twenty-year period. To reach a higher level, the response needs to accurately identify and report the primary trends and highest-level data points without factual contradictions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some basic organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and an overall statement, but there is no clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, yet the internal grouping of ideas is confused, particularly in the third paragraph where multiple activities are abruptly mixed together. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as 'To initiate with', which sounds unnatural and unidiomatic in an academic report. Reference words and logical connectors fail to guide the reader smoothly from one trend to the next. To improve in this area, the writer needs to group related data logically—such as comparing rising and falling trends—and use a wider, more accurate range of cohesive markers to connect sentences and paragraphs fluidly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally hinder communication. The writer frequently relies on basic and repetitive terms, and attempts at less common vocabulary often result in awkward word choice or spelling mistakes, such as 'polyline graph', 'performaces', and 'flucation'. Collocations are also weak, as seen in phrases like 'highest number of participants take part'. Spelling errors and incorrect word forms recur throughout the text. To achieve a higher band, the student should expand their range of vocabulary for describing statistical data and trends, ensuring correct word forms, precise terminology, and accurate spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences combined with faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. Examples include 'The given polyline graph illustrate', 'number of participants take part', and 'its fluctuate up to 55'. These frequent errors disrupt the flow of reading and occasionally cause confusion regarding the timing and direction of the trends. To progress, the student must improve their control over basic grammatical structures, ensure consistent and correct tense usage for past data, and reduce the frequency of basic errors in agreement and sentence construction.
