Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response attempts to address all parts of the task by reporting information for the five activities across the years 2000 and 2020. However, the development is limited and partially inaccurate. For instance, the overview sentence claims participants in film clubs are 'increasing' while amateur dramatics 'are decreased', which lacks precision and clarity. Furthermore, some data points are stated with awkward wording, and the selection of features misses a clear overall synthesis. To reach a higher level, the response needs to present a clearer, more fully developed overview that captures the main trends across the entire timeframe without relying solely on isolated figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text shows some organization by dividing information into separate paragraphs, including an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the logical flow between sentences feels mechanical. Cohesive devices are used repetitively, particularly phrases like 'It can be seen that' and 'in year 2000', which creates a monotonous structure. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the abrupt transitions between sentences in the body paragraphs. To improve, the student should use a wider variety of cohesive links and ensure that ideas are sequenced more smoothly to guide the reader through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student relies heavily on basic terminology and repeats words such as 'participants', 'activities', and 'number' multiple times within single sentences. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'who's took part' and 'the number is rised'. These issues occasionally cause minor strain for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of less common vocabulary and improve word formation and spelling precision, such as using 'rose' instead of 'rised' and varying verbs to describe trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies such as 'they shows information' and 'the number is decreased', as well as subject-verb agreement issues like 'most of participants took part... are increasing'. Punctuation and article usage are also inconsistent. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer must aim for greater control over basic grammatical structures, maintain consistent past tenses when reporting past data, and reduce error frequency across simple and complex sentence forms.
