Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a comprehensive overview and covering the main trends for all five activities shown in the chart. You correctly identified that the film club remained the most popular overall and noted the significant upward trajectories of table tennis and musical performances, alongside the downward trend of amateur dramatics and the fluctuating pattern of martial arts. The response sits at this level because while the major features are all reported, some of the specific data points contain minor inaccuracies when compared to the visual data—for instance, stating that musical performance initiated in 2005 with 0 participants when the chart shows it started in 2010, and minor discrepancies in starting values. To reach the next level, data selection and reporting should be consistently precise across all categories without minor numerical slips.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement with an introductory paragraph, a well-structured overview outlining the main trends, and body paragraphs dedicated to grouping the data logically. Progression is generally maintained throughout the text. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty, such as in the overly long second sentence of the overview ('...meanwhile amateur dramatics showed gradually declined and laslty, martial arts kept fluctuating...'), which crowds multiple contrasting ideas together with weak punctuation and linking devices. Additionally, referencing is sometimes less clear than it could be. To improve to a higher band, you should ensure that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and accurately, and break down complex compound sentences to enhance the logical flow between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'significant increase', 'dramatic decline', and 'kept fluctuating'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-form errors that prevent the response from achieving a higher score, such as writing 'acitivities' instead of activities, 'laslty' instead of lastly, 'perfomance' instead of performance, and 'initated' instead of initiated. Furthermore, grammatical collocation and word choice show slight awkwardness in phrases like 'showed gradually declined' instead of 'showed a gradual decline'. To reach a higher level, you need a wider and more precise range of vocabulary with accurate spelling and word formation throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like 'whereas table tennis and musical performance started with very low number but showed a significant increase over the period'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('illustrates number of participants', 'with very low number'), tense inconsistency or awkward verb phrasing ('again rise to 66 participants' instead of rose, 'showed a upward trend'), and prepositional issues. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To achieve a higher band, you need to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate tighter control over verb tenses and article usage when reporting statistical data.
