Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially and falls short of the word count requirement, coming in slightly under the 150-word minimum. While the student attempts to present an overview and mention several activities, the information provided contains significant inaccuracies regarding the visual data. For example, the student refers to percentages (e.g. "reaching nearly 60.5%") whereas the chart measures absolute numbers of participants. Furthermore, several figures are misread or confused, such as stating that musical performances had the least participants at the beginning when the graph shows zero for multiple categories, and misinterpreting the overall trends for key activities like film club and amateur dramatics. To improve, the student must carefully distinguish between absolute numbers and percentages, ensure data points are read accurately from the axes, and fully develop the response to meet the minimum length.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response shows some basic organization with an introductory sentence and paragraph divisions, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, with repetitive transitional phrases like "On the other hand" appearing multiple times in close succession. Referencing within the text is also at times confusing, which disrupts the logical flow between sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information lacks precision. To move to a higher band, the student should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally, ensure that ideas are sequenced logically with clear progression, and structure paragraphs so that each focuses on a distinct, well-connected aspect of the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and contains frequent noticeable errors in spelling, word choice, and word form that cause difficulty for the reader. There are several spelling mistakes, such as "activies", "Melbourbe", "partipants", "mainted", "maitaining", "dramtics", "dramric", "Morever", and "bening". The student also misinterprets the nature of the data by persistently using percentage signs (%) instead of numbers of participants, which points to a lack of precision in lexical and contextual control. To reach the next band, the student needs to build a more accurate range of vocabulary for describing statistical trends, eliminate basic spelling errors, and ensure that words are used in appropriate collocations and forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and tense usage, such as "players taking part in film club and table tennis has grown" (where the plural subject requires 'have') and "At 2000 film club category had" (missing articles and incorrect preposition use, as 'In 2000' is required). Punctuation and minor grammatical patterns also show inconsistency throughout the text. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student should focus on basic grammatical accuracy, such as correct prepositions for years, proper verb agreements with compound subjects, and the accurate use of articles.
