Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting an overview and reporting on the main features and trends of the provided line graph. The writer successfully identifies the Film club as the most popular activity and notes the contrasting trajectories of table tennis and amateur dramatics. However, some parts of the task are developed less fully than others, and certain details are somewhat imprecise or confused, such as the claim that table tennis grew to almost 20 members before immediately surging to 35, which misinterprets the timeline and data points on the graph. Furthermore, some data points are slightly inaccurate, such as starting musical performances at 10 members in 2010 when the chart shows them starting at zero. To move to a higher band, the writer should ensure all reported figures closely match the visual data and provide a more fully developed, accurate breakdown of the trends without confusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text presents an overall coherent arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific activities. Ideas are generally grouped logically, with the second body paragraph focusing on table tennis and the third on amateur dramatics, martial arts, and musical performances. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. There is an awkward break in the discussion of table tennis ('It then increased slightly to almost 20 members and remained same till 2020 . The figure surged to considerably to around 35...'), and referencing is occasionally unclear. Paragraphing is present, but logical progression between sentences within paragraphs lacks smoothness. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to improve the flow of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing and transitions between data points are seamless and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'fluctuated', 'surge', 'plunged', and 'commence'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, alongside some spelling mistakes. For example, 'particiapted' and 'performace' contain spelling errors, while phrases like 'film club commence with highest participants' misuse word forms and prepositions. Additionally, writing 'around 60 person' instead of 'persons' or 'people', and stating that the figure 'surged to considerably', demonstrates a lack of precision in lexical control. To reach the next level, the writer should expand their vocabulary range with greater awareness of word formation, spelling accuracy, and natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as introductory dependent clauses ('While, table tennis experienced...'). There are some grammatically accurate sentences, but the text is marred by a number of grammar and punctuation errors. Examples include tense and agreement inconsistencies, such as 'musical performace slightly. increased' (incorrect punctuation and verb placement), 'film club commence' (incorrect verb tense), and missing articles or prepositions like 'recovering to same figure' and 'began with around 35 members and decline'. Although these errors rarely impede overall communication, they persist throughout the text. To attain a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation, producing a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences.
