Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to present an overview of the line graph, but it only partially addresses the task requirements. While the writer mentions several general trends, the selection of data is erratic and contains significant inaccuracies. For instance, the student reports that 27 people participated in musical performances in 2020, whereas the graph indicates a figure closer to 18. Furthermore, the overview lacks clarity regarding the overall trends across the period, and some parts of the task are underdeveloped or confusingly described. The response presents limited and occasionally contradictory information, meaning it does not fully or accurately cover all parts of the visual data provided.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation in the essay, with paragraphs dedicated to introducing the chart and discussing individual categories, but there is no clear overall progression or logical structure guiding the reader through the main features. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inaccurately, such as the sudden transition 'Accordingly, the people in martial arts are changing slowly year by year.' Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information feels disjointed rather than logically sequenced. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, which weakens the overall flow and makes the connections between ideas mechanical rather than natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. For example, the writer misspells 'tabble tennis' and uses imprecise phrasing such as 'goes with a flow at a constant level' or 'increase and decrease samely'. While the student attempts to use vocabulary related to trends (e.g. 'declines', 'increases', 'constant level'), awkward collocations and word forms prevent the response from achieving a higher score. Less common vocabulary is attempted but lacks precision and natural control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer employs a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with occasional, faulty attempts at complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g. 'the number of participants in film club are', 'the people in martial arts are changing'), incorrect verb tenses, and awkward prepositions. For example, expressions like 'reaches to 65 at 2020' and 'decrease at reach at very low level' demonstrate persistent errors in grammatical patterns. These frequent mistakes place a strain on the reader, though the core meaning can still be understood with some effort.
