Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response attempts to cover the main features of the line graph, providing an overview of the key trends such as the contrasting trajectories of table tennis and amateur dramatics. However, the data points selected are not always accurate or clearly reported; for example, stating that the film club participants range from 65-67 and martial arts from 36-38 lacks precise grounding in the visual data, and some figures are slightly misread. Ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed, with repetitive descriptions of trends rather than a fully integrated comparison. To move to a higher band, the writer should ensure that data is cited with greater accuracy and that trends are synthesized more cohesively across the whole period.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to structure the response into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs, providing some overall organization. However, the progression of ideas is disjointed, and the relationships between sentences are not always clear. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or awkwardly, such as abrupt transitions between sentences ('Evoking interest is seen in table tennis sport'). Paragraphing is attempted, but ideas within paragraphs are not logically linked to build a smooth narrative. To improve, the writer needs to ensure logical sequencing of ideas and use a wider, more accurate range of cohesive markers to guide the reader through the data smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate to communicate the basic features of the chart, but the range is quite limited. The student makes noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation, such as 'centtre', 'dramatical fall', and 'particiants'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary often result in awkward phrasing, such as 'Evoking interest is seen' or 'Hovering parcitipants'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range and improve control over word forms, spelling, and natural collocational patterns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response relies on a very limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at more complex or varied sentence forms are frequently faulty or unnatural. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Film club and martial arts is fluctuating', 'Different trends is seen') and missing articles or prepositions. These frequent errors can cause difficulty and strain for the reader. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence structures with improved accuracy, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement and prepositional usage.
