Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to summarise the main features of the chart, such as identifying the film club as a leading activity and noting the growth in table tennis, the overall overview is superficial and inaccurate in places. The use of percentages instead of raw participant numbers throughout the response is a major flaw, as the graph measures the number of participants rather than proportions. Furthermore, several data points are misread or poorly supported, such as stating that table tennis started at 7% and musical performances reached 19% in 2020. To reach a higher level, the student needs to present a clearer, accurate overview of main trends, use correct units of measurement from the prompt, and ensure that key data comparisons are supported with precise figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response shows some organisation with basic paragraphing, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. The text is written entirely in capital letters, which disrupts standard writing conventions, and punctuation is largely absent, especially around sentence boundaries. Cohesive devices are either missing or used inadequately; transitions between sentences and ideas feel abrupt and mechanical, relying heavily on repetitive connectors like 'then' and 'meanwhile'. Paragraphs are clumped together awkwardly, making the logical flow difficult to follow. To improve coherence and cohesion, the student must use standard sentence casing, apply appropriate punctuation to demarcate sentences, and employ a wider range of cohesive phrases to connect ideas smoothly and logically throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'significant growth' and 'flacuated' (fluctuated), but these attempts are frequently marred by spelling errors and awkward word choices. Words like 'leadind' (leading) and 'signeficant' show persistent spelling weaknesses. Additionally, the misuse of percentage terms ('62%', '7%') instead of raw numbers indicates a lack of precision in reporting data. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to expand their lexical repertoire, eliminate basic spelling mistakes, and use vocabulary that accurately reflects statistical data and trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty, hampered by poor verb tenses, subject-verb agreement issues, and missing prepositions. Errors such as 'THE RATION FOR REMAINING ACTIVITIES ARE FLACUATED' demonstrate a lack of control over basic grammatical rules and tense consistency. Furthermore, the complete absence of lowercase letters and standard sentence punctuation heavily impacts readability. To progress, the student must work on foundational grammar, ensure correct tense usage when describing past trends, and use a healthy mix of simple and complex sentences with accurate punctuation.
