Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement, falling significantly short of the 150-word threshold at only 69 words. Consequently, the task is addressed only minimally. While the overview attempts to highlight some main features, such as the overall rise in table tennis and musical performances and the decline in amateur dramatics, the lack of length prevents any adequate development or inclusion of specific data points from the graph. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is met and provide a much more thorough summary including specific figures and comparisons across the categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates some basic organization by dividing the writing into an introduction and a brief overview paragraph. Cohesive devices are minimally present, such as 'Overall' and 'In contrast', which help to structure the response. However, due to the extreme brevity of the text, there is no clear overall progression or body paragraph structure to fully group and compare the data. Referencing is generally clear, but the lack of substantial content restricts more sophisticated cohesive management. To improve, the writer needs to expand the text into well-structured paragraphs that logically sequence detailed comparisons and trends.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The lexical resource used is adequate for basic communication, containing vocabulary relevant to the visual data such as 'participants', 'activities', 'social centre', and 'decline'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, for instance, writing 'for variety of activities' instead of 'for a variety of activities'. The writer attempts some less common phrasing like 'most dramatic rise' and 'remained keep fluctuating', though the latter contains a grammatical-lexical hybrid error. Vocabulary is somewhat limited due to the short length of the text. To reach a higher level, the writer should employ a wider and more precise range of vocabulary and collocation without errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as the introductory sentence and the subordinate clause beginning with 'while the participants'. However, there are notable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including the missing article in 'for variety of activities' and the incorrect verb form in 'remained keep fluctuating'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical control is inconsistent. To improve, the writer needs to eliminate errors in verb patterns, articles, and sentence construction while demonstrating a wider and more accurate range of complex grammatical structures.
