Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the main parts of the task by identifying and reporting the overall trends of the activities in the given line graph, such as the Film club remaining at the top level and Table tennis experiencing significant growth. However, some parts of the task are developed more fully than others. While key movements like Amateur dramatics going downward and Table tennis surpassing Martial arts are mentioned, the explanation of certain data points relies on inaccurate units, such as repeatedly referring to numbers as percentages (e.g., 'with percentage of almost 65' and '35%'). This indicates that the data interpretation is slightly confused, which prevents the response from achieving a higher band. Nevertheless, an overall overview is successfully attempted, and the main features are adequately outlined to meet this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement, and the information is grouped logically into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and detailed body sections. However, the cohesion between sentences is sometimes mechanical and repetitive. The writer overuses transition words such as 'Moreover' and 'Furthermore' at the beginning of almost every sentence and paragraph, which detracts from the natural flow of ideas. Additionally, referencing is occasionally imprecise, and the abrupt ending of the essay ('surpassed Amateur d') shows a breakdown in logical progression and paragraph completion. To move to a higher band, the student needs to use a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices while ensuring smoother transitions and a fully completed concluding thought.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with the student attempting less common items and descriptive verbs such as 'surpassed', 'remained unchanged', and 'went downward'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and inappropriate word choices throughout the text. The most prominent error is the misuse of the word 'percentage' to describe absolute numbers of participants. There are also occasional word-form and spelling errors, such as 'activites' instead of 'activities' and 'Tables tennis' instead of 'Table tennis'. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score because precision and control are lacking when attempting less common vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting various clauses to report the data. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, prepositions, and articles. Examples include 'data on the number of participants on social centers' (instead of 'at social centers'), 'Martial arts remain unchanged' (tense inconsistency with the past timeframe), and 'Musical performances was the latest activity' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation and sentence boundaries also show instability, leading to the incomplete sentence at the very end of the text. These errors require some effort from the reader to parse, placing the grammatical control firmly within this band.
