Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task partially, attempting to present an overview of the data provided in the graph. However, the selection of data is erratic and lacks clarity. For instance, the student states that the Film club had 62 participants in 2000 and 2020, but misreads some details or expresses trends in a mechanical fashion. Furthermore, there is a tendency to use inappropriate vocabulary such as referring to participants as 'competitors' or 'artists', which impacts the precise coverage of the information. While some main features are outlined, ideas are under-developed and lack a well-structured overall comparison of the categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation evident in the writing, as the student attempts to separate different categories into distinct sentences or mini-paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression across the text. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or repetitive, and referencing is not always clear, such as abruptly shifting between categories like 'Table tennis' and 'Amateur dramatics' without smooth logical transitions. The paragraphing is rudimentary, and the relationships between the changing trends of different social centre activities are not fluidly connected, leaving the progression disjointed in places.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The lexical resource is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic information about the graph. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, but this leads to noticeable errors and inappropriate word choices, such as calling club members 'competitors' or referring to Martial arts participants as 'artists'. There are also spelling and geographical slips like 'Malbourne'. These lexical inaccuracies cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the vocabulary from achieving the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside basic past and present tense constructions. Attempts at complex sentence forms are often faulty, as seen in awkward phrasing like 'whereas overtake the numbers of Amateur dramatics participants'. There are frequent errors in prepositions, articles, and verb agreement, such as 'Film club had highest participants' and 'its numbers of participants', which can cause confusion for the reader, though the core meaning of the figures usually remains decipherable.
