Student answer (Band 6.5)

The provided line graph illustrates information on the numbers of participants for distinct activities at a single social centre in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, the film club accounted for the highest number over the period, and the least common activities were musical performances and amateur dramatics by 2020.

Starting with the film club, it was the most popular activity throughout the period. In 2000, it was at 65 and experienced a minor decline and reached 60 by 2010. However, it steadily increased and stood at approximately 70 by 2020. Followed by martial arts, it was at 38 but fluctuated over the period, and its peak was at 40 in 2010, but steadily declined to 38 by 2020.

Turning to amateur dramatics, it was moderately popular in 2000, at approximately 28. However, this figure dramatically declined and reached 5 by 2020 and became the least common. By contrast, table tennis was at around 18 in 2000 and steadily increased to 20 by 2020, but this figure experienced a substantial growth and climbed to 55, becoming the 2nd most popular activity. Finally, musical performances were introduced in 2005 and got a little fame in the first five years. This figure was 11 by 2010 and steadily increased to approximately 20 by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task, successfully identifying the main features and trends across the five activities shown in the graph. The overview clearly highlights the dominant position of the film club and the low final participation numbers for musical performances and amateur dramatics. Key features and comparisons are generally well-reported, meeting the core requirements of this band level. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or less precise in their support, such as the minor discrepancies between the student's figures (e.g., stating table tennis reached 55 when the graph shows around 54, or minor reading variations for the film club). To reach a higher band, the reporting of data points needs to be consistently precise and closely aligned with the exact visual evidence provided.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction through the overview to the body paragraphs detailing specific activities. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related ideas, with each body paragraph focusing on specific activities. Cohesive devices such as 'Turning to', 'By contrast', and 'Finally' are employed to guide the reader through the data. Nevertheless, cohesion is sometimes slightly mechanical or awkward, such as the transition 'Followed by martial arts, it was at 38...', which creates a minor referencing issue regarding the subject of the sentence. To achieve a higher band, cohesive links must be used more flexibly and seamlessly, ensuring all referencing is unambiguous throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to trends and changes, such as 'experience a minor decline', 'steadily increased', and 'dramatically declined'. There are also successful attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'moderately popular' and 'substantive growth'. Some minor lexical inaccuracies appear, such as the phrase 'got a little fame', which is inappropriate in an academic context and affects word choice and collocation. Spelling and word choice errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the descriptions easily. To move higher, the vocabulary needs to be consistently precise and suited to formal academic register without awkward collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'while the film club accounted for...' and 'as it steadily increased'. There is good control over past tense verbs used to describe historical data trends from 2000 to 2020. However, some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing persist, such as in the sentence structure 'Followed by martial arts, it was at 38...', which lacks a clear grammatical subject for the initial participial phrase. Other minor punctuation or structural slips occur occasionally, though they rarely impede communication. To attain a higher band, the writer must produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and maintain strict grammatical control across all clauses.
