Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and trends of the provided graph, presenting an overview and selecting relevant data to compare. However, some ideas are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, the opening sentence contains factual inaccuracies regarding the location and scope of the data, stating there are 'two countries' rather than one social centre in Melbourne, Australia. Furthermore, while the general trends for activities like table tennis and the film club are identified, the details are sometimes vague or generalized, such as grouping mixed figures together. To reach a higher level, the response would need a more precise overview, strictly accurate data reporting without geographical errors, and fully extended descriptions of the data points throughout the 20-year period.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response shows a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to organize information logically into paragraphs, moving from an overview to specific activity trends. However, cohesion is frequently mechanical and sometimes faulty. The student relies on repetitive transition phrases like 'Looking first at line graph' and 'Furthermore', and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as abrupt shifts between subjects without smooth connectors. Paragraphing is present, but internal organizational flow is hindered by awkward structuring. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that each sentence links clearly and smoothly to the next to establish a stronger overall progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is adequate for the task, providing enough vocabulary to describe basic trends and numbers, such as 'rose up', 'remain stable', and 'declined'. However, there are noticeable issues with word choice, word form, and collocation that prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. Examples of awkward lexical choices include 'amount of participants', '5 number', '50 amount', and 'slightly inclined 70 amount', where nouns like 'amount', 'number', and 'sum' are misused alongside data points. Additionally, spelling and word-form errors occur, such as 'activites' and 'dramaticaly'. To progress, the student should expand their range of vocabulary for describing statistical data and use precise collocations for upward and downward trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but the range of structures remains limited and control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tenses, articles, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. Examples include 'the number of participants in film club is highest' missing necessary articles, 'The table tennis is begin 15 proportion' containing severe tense and structural confusion, and 'which is remains stable' featuring incorrect verb conjugation. Although these errors rarely completely impede communication, they occur often enough to disrupt the reading flow. To achieve a higher band, the student must produce a greater proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate better control over complex grammatical patterns, subject-verb agreement, and tense consistency.
