The line graph compares the data on the number of participants for various activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, the number of participants in film club and martial arts remained relatively unchanged, despite experiencing fluctuations and a drop. While the figure for table tennis increased substantially, musical performances showed slight growth in participants. Amateur dramatics became less popular over the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the main features of the line graph, but it suffers from a significant length penalty because the word count falls below the required 150-word minimum, coming in at 144 words (excluding copied prompt text). While the overview captures the general trends such as the stability of the film club and the rise of table tennis, some data points are omitted or slightly inaccurate. For instance, the student reports that the figure for martial arts stood at 35 in 2000 (when it was closer to 36) and generalizes musical performances incorrectly at the end of the period. Ideas are relevant, but the lack of sufficient length and under-developed comparison across all five categories restrict the score to this band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical organization. The essay is appropriately divided into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Overall', 'while', and 'Then', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, allowing the reader to follow the progression of the data easily, even if the overall depth of comparison is somewhat limited.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic trends and data points with terms like 'fluctuations', 'increased substantially', and 'sharp rise'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'relatively unchanged' and 'amateur dramatics', though there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and data reporting, such as rounding or stating approximations loosely. Spelling and word choice are generally clear and do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'which fell to 60 in 2010, before reaching 64 in 2020 again' and 'Despite experiencing fluctuations'. There are some minor errors in grammar and punctuation, but they are infrequent and rarely impede communication. Control over tense usage for past data is largely consistent, showcasing a solid foundation that borders on higher proficiency bands.
