Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a rudimentary overview that misinterprets key contextual details by claiming the data shows activities performed in two countries rather than at a single social centre in Melbourne. While the student attempts to report on all five categories, the data points are occasionally imprecise, incorrectly referring to percentages rather than participant numbers and misreading specific figures from the chart. The overview is overly simplistic, and the ideas lack clear development, reflecting a minimal attempt to summarise the main features and trends such as the contrasting trajectories of table tennis and amateur dramatics over the twenty-year period. To reach higher bands, the writer must ensure accurate interpretation of the prompt, adopt precise numerical data without confusing numbers with percentages, and provide a well-developed overview outlining the overall trends rather than merely listing isolated data points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation evident in the progression of paragraphs by activity category, but overall progression is hindered by a lack of cohesive devices and mechanical referencing. The text is structured into a brief introduction followed by individual paragraphs for each category, yet transitions between sentences and ideas feel abrupt and repetitive, heavily relying on basic sequential phrases. Paragraphing is attempted, but sentences run together without adequate punctuation or logical links, making the overall arrangement somewhat disjointed. To improve cohesion, the student should employ a wider variety of cohesive devices such as 'in contrast', 'meanwhile', and 'subsequently', and ensure clear referencing so that the relationship between different activities and trends is logically connected throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, demonstrating an adequate range only for basic functions. The student repeatedly relies on simple terms like 'amount', 'peoples', and 'rise' or 'decrease' to describe trends, accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'flactuate', 'decerease', and 'becasue'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are minimal and frequently inaccurate. Furthermore, the misuse of 'percent' instead of participant numbers restricts lexical precision. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider and more accurate range of vocabulary, including varied synonyms for change (such as 'fluctuated', 'declined', or 'surged') and ensure correct spelling and word forms throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside faulty attempts at complex ones. Frequent errors in grammar and punctuation appear throughout the text, including missing capitalisation at the start of sentences, subject-verb agreement issues like 'the number of peoples that take part in film club are', and incorrect prepositional patterns. Complex structures tend to be inaccurate, and punctuation is largely neglected. To progress to a higher band, the student must increase the variety of sentence structures by accurately combining clauses, improve control over subject-verb agreement and verb tenses for past data, and pay closer attention to basic punctuation and capitalization.
