Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the chart, including an overview. The student attempts to make comparisons and track trends across the five activities over the twenty-year period. However, some aspects of the task are developed more fully than others, and there are noticeable inaccuracies in data reporting when compared to the visual source. For instance, the student states that amateur dramatics started at around 15 in 2000 and reached around 8 in 2020, whereas the actual figures were 26 and 6 respectively. Similarly, the peak for film club is stated as 64, which is fairly accurate, but the overall summarization tends to oversimplify some data points. The overview notes fluctuations in almost every activity except amateur dramatics and table tennis, which misses the reality that table tennis actually rose steadily rather than fluctuating. These underdeveloped points and minor data misinterpretations prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory paragraph to an overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing specific activities. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to connect concepts, such as 'Overall, it is evident', 'In contrast', and 'Meanwhile', which contributes to a logical flow. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical, such as the awkward phrasing 'involving on it' and 'engage on it'. Furthermore, some transitions feel slightly forced or repetitive, and the referencing of pronouns and ideas could be managed more smoothly. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to ensure that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and naturally throughout the text without awkward connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and lexical chunks such as 'dramastic fall', 'significant rise', and 'remained constant'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. Examples include 'every activities' (ungrammatical noun form), 'amount of participants' (instead of 'number of participants'), and awkward prepositional collocations like 'involving on it' and 'participating in ... and people started to engage on it'. There are also minor capitalization oversights with proper nouns like 'melbourne' and 'australia'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations do not impede communication, but they restrict the score to this level because more precise control and natural phrasing are required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory dependent clauses successfully, such as 'The line graph depicts information about the numbers of participants...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('the film club was the most successful activities'), subject-verb agreement issues ('every activities' should be 'every activity' or 'all activities'), and awkward prepositional patterns within grammatical structures. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over singular and plural noun agreements.
