Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the line graph over the twenty-year period. You provided an overview and highlighted key trends, such as the consistent popularity of the film club and the dramatic rise of table tennis. However, some ideas are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies when compared to the visual data. For instance, your description of amateur dramatics and table tennis contains slight numerical discrepancies, such as stating that amateur dramatics started with 27 participants and mentioning an initial figure of 18 for table tennis. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are referenced with greater precision and that all comparisons are fully extended without minor misinterpretations of the chart's values.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to group information logically by activity and time period. You make use of cohesive devices to guide the reader through the data, such as "To begin with", "On the contrary", and "Subsequently". However, the cohesion sometimes feels mechanical or slightly clumsy, and paragraphing could be improved to better separate the overview from the detailed body points. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like "intersected with amateur dramatics at 2010", where the logical flow becomes slightly tangled. For a higher band, ensure smoother transitions between sentences and more natural integration of cohesive devices without relying on repetitive transitional formulas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive verbs such as "fluctuations", "exhibited", and "dramatically". However, there are notable word choice and word formation inaccuracies that restrict your score, such as writing "programes" instead of programmes or programs, using awkward phrasing like "became the part of", and misspelling "activty". Additionally, repeating phrases like "number of participants" several times reduces lexical variety. To achieve a higher band, you need to expand your vocabulary range further, improve spelling consistency, and use precise collocations to describe statistical trends naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating that you can construct multi-clause sentences such as "At the same time, table tennis had only 18 number of participants initially grew to 20 in number remained constant for 5 years...". This sentence, however, illustrates a recurring issue with run-on structures and missing punctuation. There are several grammatical errors, including verb tense and form issues like "participants took part" (instead of taking part) and "amateur dramatics start" (instead of started), as well as missing prepositions in phrases like "participated for the first 5 years in musical performance". While these errors rarely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent you from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on sentence boundary punctuation and accurate verb tense consistency when reporting past data.
