Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, selecting relevant data points, and making appropriate comparisons across the 20-year period. An overview is provided right at the beginning, noting the general trends such as the film club remaining the highest and table tennis seeing significant growth. Key figures are accurately cited, such as table tennis climbing dramatically to over 50 in 2020 and the film club fluctuating around the mid-sixties. However, ideas are not fully extended across every single activity, and there is a tendency to over-generalize slightly in certain trajectory descriptions. While all data is grounded in the visual source, a more thorough development of the comparisons between categories would be needed to push into higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction through the overview to the detailed body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating different activity groups into distinct sections. However, cohesion is at times a bit mechanical, with transitional phrases like 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'Adding to it' feeling slightly formulaic. Referencing and cohesive devices generally serve to guide the reader, but minor awkwardness in connective phrasing prevents the text from achieving a smoother, more sophisticated flow. The half-band strength shows clear logical sequencing, though the overuse of basic transition markers holds it back from the next level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the data trends through terms like 'fluctuated', 'declined', 'rose', and 'climed'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but there are notable spelling errors ('Melobourne', 'comsistently', 'climed') and minor word-choice inaccuracies, such as 'most people were participated' instead of 'participated'. While the range is sufficient to communicate the main features clearly, these lexical slips and spelling mistakes mean the response sits comfortably within the current band rather than achieving greater precision and stylistic control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordinate clauses and comparative structures. However, control over grammar is inconsistent, featuring several noticeable errors such as tense and verb form issues ('film club had remain', 'amateur dramatics had rose', 'martial arts have some ups and downs'), passive/active voice confusion ('were participated'), and missing articles. These errors do not generally impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to characterize a profile where simple sentences are generally more secure than complex structures, placing the grammar at this specific level.
