Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some key features of the graph while missing others and containing inaccuracies. For example, the student writes that in 2005 musical performances had zero participants and 'reaches almost 17 members in 2020' (the actual figure is closer to 18-20, though close enough), but fails to provide a clear overview of the overall trends. Some data is misreported or overly vague, such as stating that 'Martial Arts have 35 members in the year 2010 but it ascends and decsends', which lacks precision. Ideas are limited and under-developed, and the response lacks a clear structuring of the main comparisons across the five activities.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the response, but it lacks clear overall progression and paragraphing is poorly handled. The text is written as a brief introduction followed by a single block of body sentences without proper paragraph breaks for different activities or trends. Cohesive devices are minimal or repetitive; for instance, the writer overuses words like 'and' to chain clauses together, and referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'that number faces a downfall'. While the general progression moves roughly through time and categories, the lack of cohesive control and paragraphing keeps this aspect at a lower level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic information about the chart. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as 'activites' (spelling), 'that held' instead of 'that were held', 'almst' (spelling), 'Amareur' (spelling), and awkward phrasing like 'got a boom' or 'gain above 50 participants'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success, and word choices occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. Spelling and word-formation errors persist throughout the text, preventing access to higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with occasional, faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing capitalisation ('melbourne Australia'), missing punctuation and capitalization for sentence boundaries in the opening paragraph, and poor tense consistency ('individuals participated', 'that held', 'has 0 participant', 'increases'). Subject-verb agreement issues also appear, such as 'musical performances has' and 'Martial Arts have'. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted grammatical range.
