Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response attempts to address the task by selecting several features from the line graph, such as the trends for the film club and table tennis. However, the overview is extremely confused and difficult to follow, containing inaccurate summaries such as claiming people joined music performances 'in 2005 year' with zero participants. Furthermore, several data points are misreported or vague, such as stating that martial arts 'peaked at 35 number in the end of period' or reporting the film club figures loosely. While some main trends are identified, the development is limited and partially inaccurate due to misinterpretations of the visual data, placing the response right in the middle category where the task is only partially addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response shows some basic organisation by grouping information into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and a body paragraph. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the transitions between sentences feel mechanical. Cohesive devices are often misused or awkward, such as repeating 'than' instead of 'then', and using expressions like 'On the other hand' or 'Lastly' rather rigidly. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks logical flow, particularly in the second paragraph where multiple disparate trends are crammed together without clear sequencing. Referencing and referencing pronouns are sometimes unclear, making it harder for the reader to follow the progression of data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with frequent lexical errors that impact the precision of the writing. There are numerous spelling and word-form errors, such as 'diffrent' instead of different, 'participanted' instead of participated, 'matirial' instead of martial, and 'nearlyn' instead of nearly. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to trends, such as 'dramatically' and 'significantly', but these are often combined with awkward prepositions or incorrect word choices, such as 'faced significantly an downward' instead of 'faced a significant downward trend'. These noticeable errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted lexical range appropriate for this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is limited, relying mostly on simple and awkwardly attempted complex sentence structures. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions within grammatical patterns, such as 'the number of people the most of joined in film club', 'people started joined', and 'the numbers of people accounted was at 15'. Complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to distorted syntax, such as 'while the number of people joined least in table tennis activity'. Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on clauses and comma splices. These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader throughout the text.
