Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on the main features and trends of the five activities shown in the line graph, meeting the length requirement after discounting copied prompt material. An overview is attempted, noting the film club's dominance and the contrasting trends of table tennis and amateur dramatics. However, some key features are under-developed or inaccurately reported, such as claiming that musical performers stood at the second position by the end of the decade when table tennis clearly reached a much higher figure (around 54 compared to 18). Additionally, percentages are used instead of actual participant numbers, indicating a slight misinterpretation of the vertical axis units. To reach a higher level, the student needs to select and present data with greater factual precision and ensure all overview statements are fully supported by the graph's actual values.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to group information into introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Progression is generally visible, but cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'However', and 'Hence' are used, but referencing and transitions are occasionally awkward, as seen in abrupt shifts between paragraphs without smooth logical bridges. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs suffers from repetitive phrasing and unclear pronoun or subject referencing, such as 'The martial arts people' and 'The amatuer dynamics'. To improve, the student should employ a wider and more natural range of cohesive devices, ensure seamless links between sentences, and maintain clear topical progression throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic trends through words such as 'steadily', 'gradual variation', and 'drastic rise'. However, the writer attempts less common vocabulary with noticeable inaccuracy in word choice, collocation, and word form, resulting in frequent lexical slips. Examples include 'accounted with highest numbers', 'participatants' (repeated spelling errors), 'muscial perfomance', and 'amatuer dynamics' instead of dramatics. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score. To achieve a higher band, the student must demonstrate greater precision in word choice, improve spelling control, and use correct collocations and word forms when describing statistical trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, attempting structures like subordinate clauses and passive constructions. However, grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, articles, and word agreement. Examples include 'illusrates the information on', 'accounted with highest numbers', 'table tennis were witnessed a drastic rise', and missing articles before nouns. Punctuation errors also occur, such as spaces before commas ('Hence ,'). While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To progress, the writer needs to eliminate basic structural errors, improve control over subject-verb agreement and prepositions, and produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences.
